Two fires in a week hit Court

From the Ledbury Reporter, first published Friday 16th Mar 2007.

Canon Frome Court has suffered two fires in less than a week.

The first was on Wednesday, March 7, and badly damaged the roof and bathroom in a converted stable block. It started in a wood-burning stove.

The second and unrelated blaze was on Sunday in the hall itself, shortly before 5pm, and it is being blamed on an unattended candle.

Fire Brigade spokesman Alec Mackie said: "The candle was in a wine bottle, the wax was running down, the bottle tipped over and set fire to paper, then spread to a computer, engulfing it.

"The message is, never leave a lighted candle unattended. It is an accident waiting to happen."

No-one was hurt but one room suffered extensive damage and parts were smoke-logged.

Two engines from Ledbury and one from Hereford attended. Four hose-reel jets were used to put out flames and firefighters used breathing apparatus. At its height, 17 firefighters were there and crew were on site until 6.15pm.
