MICHAELMAS FAYRE The three days of the Michaelmas Fayre over the last weekend in September were a huge success for the Church and for the parish of Lyonshall. There were 73 scarecrows on display all round the parish, which caused a great deal of interest and drew many visitors. The Gardeners' Question Time was well-attended and the expert panel were challenged on several occasions with the quality of the questions. On Saturday morning the guided walk, led by John Parker, covered two miles including Offa's Dyke, the line of the Horse-Drawn Tramway, the site of the Medieval Village, and Lyonshall Castle. Local Author Sam Llewellyn gave an inspirational talk on how to write a book, and sold signed copies of his own books afterwards. The Mini-Horticultural Show in the Church on the Saturday drew 81 entries from 44 exhibitors, and provided an attractive point of interest in the beautifully-decorated Church. Throughout the weekend the produce stall and teas and coffees were kept busy by the constant flow of visitors. Harvest Festival Service on the Sunday morning saw a huge attendance and the highly-relevant sermon from Nick Reed, Agricultural Chaplain of the Diocese, was well-received. The Harvest Festival Lunch in the Lyonshall Memorial Hall was enjoyed by more than 100 people, and the Grand Auction of Promises, conducted immediately afterwards by Gareth Wall of McCartneys, raised a staggering £5,100 towards Church funds. Full reports and results of competitions can be read on www.lyonshall.net. more...
