THE school run in Hereford was replaced by the school walk for at least a week.
Children from the St Thomas Cantilupe School in the city were encouraged to take part in an initiative to get youngsters out of the car and onto their feet.
A "park and stride" scheme was also introduced for those children who could not completely give up the internal combustion engine but at least walked part-way to the school.
"The children at our school are already very aware of the importance of environmental and health issues to their future and are usually very keen to walk," said Rob Hattersley, deputy headteacher.
"Walking to school helps our children learn to be safe, reduce obesity and health problems, provides time to talk to parents, helps solve Hereford's traffic problems and reduces local pollution that causes all sorts of health problems, as well as contributing to global warming."
