Nelson events reach climax

From the archive, first published Thursday 20th Oct 2005.

CELEBRATIONS to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar reach their climax this weekend with a series of events running throughout Herefordshire.

In Hereford, the weekend will culminate on Sunday with a service of thanksgiving at the cathedral.

A drumhead service on Castle Green is scheduled at 10am to be followed with a parade through the city to the cathedral for the thanksgiving service planned for noon.

Guests invited by the Mayor, Marcelle Lloyd-Hayes, will then attend a lunch at the town hall.

Also on Sunday afternoon, a beacon will be lit during an afternoon of celebrations at Croft Castle to mark the occasion.

It will be one of a chain to be lit up and down the country.

Tomorrow, on Trafalgar Day itself, it will be 200 years since the sea battle that cost Admiral Lord Nelson his life and led to 100 years of Naval domination and the heyday of the British Empire.

After getting to know the county while sourcing timber for his ships and beef for his men's rations, Britain's greatest naval hero was given the freedom of Hereford and the city has its own Nelson's Column on Castle Green, one of the few in the country and a lasting reminder of its links with the admiral.

As part of the celebrations, The White Ensign - flag of the Royal Navy - will proudly billow in the Hereford breeze from the tops of Shire Hall, the town hall and the library.

A whole host of various activities are planned to celebrate Nelson's connections with Herefordshire, including:

An exhibition of posters at Berrington Hall (to Oct 31) displaying the wonders of our coastline and the communities that have grown up around it.
