Roy's hope for faded glories

From the archive, first published Monday 31st Jan 2005.

FOR a quarter of a century two unusual paintings have languished in the bell tower of a Herefordshire village church.

Now, through the efforts of former church warden Roy Jones, they are about to see the light of day again in St David's Church at Little Dewchurch.

But first they need a little tender loving care, having gathered dust over the last 25 years and showing signs of corrosion round the edges.

The paintings are not of any monetary value, but Mr Jones believes they are of historic interest to the church and should be restored at a cost of about £7,000.

They were painted on zinc sheet by artist cum architect Frederick Preedy, who supervised the refurbishment of St David's in the late 1860s, after a period of dilapidation.

When the church reopened in 1870 the Preedy paintings were hung on either side of the altar and remained there until 25 years ago, when they were banished to the bell tower because they had become too dirty.

But Mr Jones wants to see the works of art back in their rightful places. Each measures about 50ins by 30ins, and are called Holy, Holy, Holy and Lord God of Hosts, showing angels in their glory.

He is backed by the PCC and the Diocesan Advisory Committee: now he needs the money to accomplish the task.

So far, Hereford Historic Churches Trust have gifted £1,000 and the William and Jane Morris Trust, £250.

Mr Jones said it was hoped to obtain more grants and to raise cash through local fund raising.
