Jo skis Milky Way for hospice

From the archive, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

A ST Michael's Hospice nurse is to ski the `Milky Way' to raise money for a cancer charity after being inspired by a friend's battle against the disease.

Not quite as out-of-this-world as it sounds, Jo Gilbert will spend two days traversing 75 miles of the Milky Way Ski region on the French-Italian border, mostly on red runs.

Support

Jo, an aromatherapist and bank nurse at St Michael's, is taking on the challenge in aid of CancerBACUP as a thank you to the charity, which offered valuable advice and support to her friend and colleague Debbie Smithers.

The charity ski will take place at the end of January 2004 but Jo is already in preparation.

Husband Pat will be a `roadie' for the intrepid 63-year-old who has to raise at least £1,100 to take up the challenge.

Jo, who has been skiing for 10 years, said: "I am training with Jeremy Wheadon from Sixth Sense who has been great and I am doing a raffle which will be drawn at Hereford Ski shop, `Sporting Triangle'.

"It is my idea of bliss to be able to ski from dawn to dusk but I know I am going to be on my knees by the end of it."

CancerBACUP provides high quality information, practical advice and support to patients, carers, relatives and health professionals.

To contact CancerBACUP call 0808 800 1234 or log on to www.cancerbacup.org.uk.
