Church roof gap sealed at last after 1974 quake

From the archive, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

THE roof of St Michael's church, Llanfihangel Crucorney, had already been showing signs of strain when an earth tremor in 1974 hastened its demise and the nave was declared unsafe.

Part of it was rebuilt and re-hallowed in 1977 but one section has remained open to the sky - until now. As the first stage of a restoration plan, the church roof has been completely restored. A large congregation, made up of past and present parishioners, gathered for a thanksgiving service in which the Bishop of Monmouth, the Rt Rev Dominic Walker, re-dedicated the nave.

The present vicar, Rev Derek Young, was joined by other clergy including one of his predecessors Rev Peter Price and by the family of the late Rev Alex Davies who was vicar when the roof had to be removed in 1974.
