Challenge of non-traditional

From the archive, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

MS ASHWORTH sought me out after our performance of Carry on Down the River to inform me that she was going to complain to both the vicar and the bishop.

I was happy to tell her that the vicar was delighted with our use of the churchyard - particularly the beautiful dance introduction - and that the bishop had been a supporter of our work for some time.

Of course, you can't please all of the people all of the time and New Theatre Works, by definition, creates works that cannot be categorised as traditional, so we are bound to attract the odd vociferous dissenter, but I think I must put the balance right.

The poor man haunting the churchyard was not in a rational state and thanks to local, highly supportive residents, the police were called in to deal with him.

The show was a complete sell-out every night leaving several disappointed people on the shore.

I have just seen a rough cut of a documentary about the development of this complex piece and the reaction of the audience alighting from the boats afterwards varied from `Amazing - never seen anything like it' to `There was so much to it .. I'd like to see it over and over again."

Come to northern Spain, where we hope to take it next year!

DR ELLIE PARKER,

New Theatre Works director.
