I fully agree with the sentiments of Margaret Trigg and Harold Morgan. I have attended many remembrance parades accompanying my late elderly father, and the soldiers and airmen on parade have been kept waiting for the party of dignitaries to arrive before parading!
My father was not a service man in the war as he was part of the "reserve occupation". He was a proud man who served his country in many ways (albeit secretly) and did a lot of good. He regularly attended remembrance parades and stood to attention throughout, although not actively taking part in the parade. He wore his medals with pride.
Many on parade these days have served our country well, they should receive the respect they deserve. I hope the dignitaries remember that on November 11.
Perhaps a solution in future could be that the parade be asked into the Town Hall for a sit-down (and where there are toilets!) before setting off. The official party could leave before them and then they march on.
That way they have a well earned rest before commencing their own duties.
I am sure arrangements are too far in hand this year to be changed.
