SPECIAL MASS -- Belmont Abbey was full to capacity as 11 young Catholics rejoiced with their gathered families at a special Parish Mass. The occasion was their first Holy Communion, which was timed to follow the Feast of Corpus Christi when the whole church celebrates the way it believes in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and the personal receiving of Jesus Christ by each communicant.
During the Mass, celebrated by Father Matthew Carney, Parish Priest and Prior of Belmont Abbey, the children from several local Catholic parishes read the scriptures, including a gospel where character voice parts were acted out by them with only the words of Jesus spoken by Father Matthew.
The youngsters welcomed into full communion with the Church were: Katie Baynham, Darcey Baynham, Edward Davey, Simon George, Charlotte Heeley, Matthew Heeley, Joseph Langley, Mary-Clare McGivern, Benjamin Ramage-Smith, Lauren Rosier and Nicole Rosier.
They also wrote and spoke all the intercessory prayers for the service, making special mention of Father Simon McGurk, now on missionary service in Peru and former parishpriest of both Belmont and St Francis Xavier.
The youngsters were prepared for the occasion through the Children's Liturgy Group led by Jane Davies and Julia Davey, and the music for the service, which included a new favourite from CJM Music `Bread of Life, Truth eternal' was sung by the Youth Music Group under the leadership of Liz Morawiecka.
